A secret Star Wars film is in production
By Kieran Burt.
Star Wars reportedly has another movie project in production, according to sources at both The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline. Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson will write the project. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who directed two episodes of Ms Marvel, is set to direct the film.
The project is still largely under wraps, however sources told The Hollywood Reporter that it will be set after The Rise of Skywalker, and that it will move away from the Skywalker storyline.
They also add that characters from the sequel trilogy could appear in the film. The project is set to be a standalone movie, but its success could lead to more spin-off titles.
It’s important to stress that nothing yet has been officially confirmed by Lucasfilm.
Damon Linedof is extremely talented, co-creating the critically acclaimed Lost and serving as the creator and writer for 2018’s Watchmen.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is no stranger to talent herself. She is best known for her Oscar-winning documentary shorts Saving Face and A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness. She also won an Emmy for A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness.
Justin Britt-Gibson is a rising talent in Hollywood, who worked as an executive story editor for Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain. He has also written episodes of Starz’s The Counterpart.
Star Wars has not seen a film release since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The next film release date on the calendar is 2025, which will be six years after Episode IX.
There are currently four other films in various states of production. Taika Waititi is working on an as of yet untitled Star Wars film, with Rian Johnson and Kevin Feige set to direct projects of their own. Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron was meant to release in December 2023, but was indefinitely delayed in September.
While Star Wars has been absent from the big screen, it’s been making its presence felt on the small screen. Disney+ has featured several shows since the franchise’s absence, such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Andor is currently streaming, with season 3 of The Mandalorian following in February 2023.
