Dave Filoni promoted to Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer expanding Star Wars oversight

Dave Filoni has been promoted to become Lucasfilm’s Chief Creative Officer, which gives him even greater oversight of ‘Star Wars’ projects going on at the studio.

The news was first announced by Vanity Fair, with the piece revealing that Filoni will be involved in ‘Star Wars’ projects much earlier in the creative process.

Filoni will work alongside Lucasfilm Head of Development Carrie Beck and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy on projects going forward.

Talking to Vanity Fair, Filoni says “In the past, in a lot of projects I would be brought into it, I would see it after it had already developed a good ways.”

He adds “In this new role, it’s opened up to basically everything that’s going on. When we’re planning the future of what we’re doing now, I’m involved at the inception phase.”

But Lucasfilm creatives shouldn’t worry about Filoni imposing his will on them.

“I’m not telling people what to do,” the ‘Ahsoka’ creator says.

“But I do feel I’m trying to help them tell the best story that they want to tell. I need to be a help across the galaxy here, like a part of a Jedi Council almost,” he finishes.

Filoni is a veteran at Lucasfilm, having first started working alongside ‘Star Wars’ creator George Lucas on the animated ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ which ran for seven seasons.

After the studio was bought by Disney, Filoni continued working on animated shows and more recently has made the jump to live-action.

At Star Wars Celebrations in 2023, it was revealed Filoni will be making his own ‘Star Wars’ movie, set in the era of the New Republic versus the Imperial Remnant.

When speaking to Vanity Fair, ‘Ahsoka’ star Rosario Dawson spoke about the possibility of a second season.

“I mean, they’ve not said anything officially, but I remember when we were at Star Wars Celebration in London and they were like, ‘We’re giving Dave a movie!’ And I was like, ‘I kind of feel like that means we’re probably going to get a second season.’ For a while now, and especially now with the strike and everything, no one can say anything. But he did say he was working on an outline. So, we’ll see,” she says.

The next ‘Star Wars’ project set for release is the TV show ‘Skeleton Crew’, which will focus on a group of kids adrift in the ‘Star Wars galaxy.
