EA announces single-player Black Panther game

EA has confirmed that they will be making a brand new video-game for another Marvel superhero, this time focused around Black Panther.

The publisher describes it as “an original, third-person, single-player Black Panther game,” but otherwise very few details are available on what the game will be about.

It will be set in Black Panther’s home country of Wakanda, a technologically advanced nation thanks to a rare metal called vibranium.

Development is being handled by a new EA studio called Cliffhanger Games in partnership with Marvel Games.

Cliffhanger Games is led by Kevin Stephens, who was previously studio head at ‘Middle- Earth: Shadow of Mordor’ developer Monolith Productions.

“We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game,” Stephens said.

“Wakanda is a rich superhero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.”

A release date for the game hasn’t been set, nor are the platforms the game will be available on.

EA said it will continue to build out the development team “over the next few years,” adding that the game is “still in early development with a long road ahead.”

Black Panther joins the list of several Marvel games currently in development, from Insomniac’s ‘Spider-Man 2’, and ‘Wolverine’, EA Motive Studio’s ‘Iron Man’ and Skydance New Media’s untitled Black Panther and Captain America game.

Parent company Disney has also committed to developing games for its most popular properties, with several ‘Star Wars’ games planned by different studios, ‘Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora’ from Ubisoft and the Indiana Jones game from MachineGames, the team behind ‘Wolfenstein’.

Only two of these have a release date set with ‘Spider-Man 2’, set for release on October 20, 2023 and Frontiers of Pandora scheduled for December 7, 2023.
