Patrick Stewart up for a Picard movie but has got “no eager response”
The third season of Star Trek: Picard has recently wrapped, with audiences saying goodbye to the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) for a final time. Showrunner Terry Matalas wanted the final season to give Picard a “proper sendoff.”
But Sir Patrick Stewart isn’t finished with the character. In an interview with IndieWire, he and LeVar Burton explained they have pitched a Picard film to end the character’s story on.
“I think we could do a movie, a Picard-based movie. Now not necessarily at all about [Jean-Luc] Picard but about all of us,” Stewart said.
“And to take many of those wonderful elements, particularly from Season 3 of Picard and take out of that what I think could be an extraordinary movie.
“I keep telling people and mentioning it, and so far there’s been no eager response, but it might well happen. And that would be, I think, a very appropriate way to say, ‘And goodbye folks,’” he added.
Stewart was joined in calls for a Picard film by LeVar Burton.
“The bridge of the Enterprise reminded me of how much fun – because that was the one set where we would all be in a scene together, right?…on the bridge days, they were raucous,” he said. “We were reveling in each other and reveling in the work. And it was glorious. It really was.”
“I went down there and I walked around the bridge alone and simply allowed all the memories to flood back…the bridge signified to me creativity, work, and companionship,” Burton said.
“And also, dependency. As Jean-Luc Picard I needed every single one of my fellow actors up there. And I think it was the same for all of us. There was a combination of dependency and freedom,” he added.
But if this doesn’t happen, Burton thinks that season three was still an excellent ending for the TNG cast.
“If this is indeed it, I don’t believe we could possibly have gone out in a better moment for the crew, and for us as a family.”
The idea of Picard ending on a film isn’t surprising, as the cast of the TNG have starred in their own feature films, the last being the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis.
Season three of Picard undeniably left fans wanting more, and so would no doubt be up for a film. And Stewart and Burton know this, hence their pitch. Audiences will just have to wait and see if Paramount will take them up.
