The Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy to Watch This Week
July gets off to a flying start, as a classic franchise returns to theatres, with what could potentially be the year’s first billion dollar hit, and Netflix brings one of its most popular shows to an end after two seasons!
Jurassic World: Rebirth
In theaters July 2
One of the most successful franchises ever is back. In 1993, Steven Spielberg created one of the greatest films ever made with ‘Jurassic Park’, his adaptation of Michael Crichton’s best-selling thriller. Since then, it’s been a constant presence on our screens, with the 2025 reboot ‘Jurassic World’ bringing the franchise into a new era.
Now it’s back again, with ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’. This is the seventh movie in the series, and you can feel it. There’s definitely a feeling of lethargy and a lack of new ideas on display, and it’s mostly unconnected to the storyline of the previous trilogy. But despite a negative critical reception, it’s been a hit with audiences, and hugely successful at the box office, so if you’re looking for some dinosaur action, this movie has you covered.
The Sandman season 2
Streaming July 3 on Netflix
The second season of ‘The Sandman’ is arriving on Netflix, bringing the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s comic book to a close. The official synopsis reads: “Dream of the Endless must face one impossible decision after another as he attempts to save himself, his kingdom, and the waking world from the epic fallout of his past misdeeds. To make amends, Dream must confront longtime friends and foes, gods, monsters, and mortals.”
The second season of the show promises a thrilling finale, and the conclusion of Dream’s storyline, so if you’ve been with this show since it began in 2022, then this is one you won’t want to miss.
The Old Guard 2
Streaming July 2 on Netflix
The sequel to the 2020 movie starring Charlize Theron as Andy, the leader of an immortal group of warriors. This time, Andy must grapple with her newfound mortality, as a mysterious threat emerges that could put everything she’s worked towards for thousands of years at risk, while an old friend could possess the key to the mystery of immortality.
Thunderbolts*
Available to watch on digital from July 1
Marvel’s second release this year, that follows the Thunderbolts, a group of misfit anti-heroes, who have to try and overcome their dark pasts and work together to save the world from a new threat.
Despite having a good critical reception, and seeing the return of characters like Florence Pugh’s Yelena and David Harbour’s Red Guardian, the movie was a disappointment at the box office, grossing less than $400 million. So if you’re one of those who skipped seeing it in the cinema, or you want to experience it all over again, now you can, with the movie arriving on digital platforms on July 1st..
