The Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy to Watch This Week
As another week arrives, so does another release slate of new movies and TV shows to check out. This week there seems to be a theme of robots, so if you want some metal menaces to keep you entertained, check these out.
Murderbot
Releasing May 16 on AppleTV+
They might be better known for their range of tech products, but Apple also has a hidden gem with their streaming platform, which hasn’t reached the heights of other sites like Netflix and Amazon Prime. That’s a shame as they happen to have some great sci-fi on offer. Having dropped one great show earlier this year with season two of ‘Severance’, they now have their next hit lined up in the shape of ‘Murderbot’.
Based on ‘The Murderbot Diaries’ by Martha Wells, the show follows a cyborg who calls himself Murderbot (Alexander Skarsgard). He’s secretly broken his programming and become sentient, having a love-hate relationship with humans, and has to hide his true nature while performing dangerous assignments for his owners.
Love, Death + Robots season 4
Releasing May 15 on Netflix
While we’re on the theme of robots, the popular sci-fi anthology returns for a fourth season at Netflix. Created by Tim Miller or ‘Deadpool’ fame, the animated show features stories from the likes of David Fincher, each revolving around one of the key themes of love, death or robots. This latest season teases dinosaur gladiators, messianic cats, and string puppet rock stars.
Snow White
Available to rent or buy on digital May 13
The latest low-effort entry in a long line of live-action remakes of their classic animated films from Disney. Judging from the box office returns, not many people bothered to turn up to theatres for this movie, so if you missed it and want to check it out (even if only from morbid curiosity) then now you can watch at home on digital. I’m not sure how this can be tied into the theme of robots, unless you want to count Gal Gadot’s performance as the evil queen, though to be fair to her, at least she’s not a nightmarish CGI dwarf.
That’s all for this week, be sure to check back next week for another rundown of the best sci-fi and fantasy movies, TV, and streaming shows available for you to watch.
