Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer reaction

By Kieran Burt.

The Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been released, and it shows off the many, many new Spider-Men (and women) that will be appearing in the film, whilst also teasing another emotional story.

The trailer opens with a conversation that Miles is having with his mum, something that’s weaved through the majority of it. Miles’ mum seems to have done something to embarrass Miles, as she apologises for “icing his game,” and reflects on him growing up.This could tie into a shot later on, where Miles is storming away from his mum at a rooftop party.

Into The Spider-Verse’s familial conflict is primarily between Miles and his dad, pushing his mum out of the spotlight a bit. Its sequel looks like it will centre its emotional conflict around Miles and his mum instead, fleshing out their relationship.

There is a brief recap of scenes from Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, with Miles hanging out with Gwen and Peter, before the trailer moves into more new footage. Gwen returns in the multiverse bridge, a scene which audiences have seen in its entirety in the First Look clip for the film in December 2021.

It’s here that Gwen takes Miles on a trip through the multiverse, with many cameos of iconic Spider-Men/Women (Spider-People?). Some that stood out are the Adrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, the video-game versions of Spider-Man in the 2018 game Spider-Man and the 2020 game Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mary-Jane Watson as Spinneret, Bombastic Bag-Man, the return of a now married Peter B. Parker, and Spider-Woman, who will be played by Issa Rae.

That’s just a small sample of the many that appear, and it seems they might have a role to play soon, but continuing on with the trailer, there’s a better look at Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099, monitoring the multiverse. There is a brief glimpse of Miles, Peter and Gwen being with Spider-Man 2099, no doubt discussing the film’s threat.

But after this scene, the warm and friendly cameos of the many Spider-People turns ugly, as whatever Miles has done, it’s caused them to swarm him and attack him. This includes Spider-Man 2099, who demands to know who Miles thinks he is, and attacks him at the end of the trailer.

It seems like it won’t just be Miles that falls out with Spider-Man 2099, as, trapped behind some kind of forcefield, is Gwen, saying that they’re supposed to be the good guys, with Spider-Man 2099 replying firmly that they are. There must be a very strong difference of opinion between Miles, Gwen and Spider-Man 2099, and whatever it is causes a moral split within the group.

While most of the trailer shows off the enormous amount of Spider-People across the multiverse, it doesn’t forget the heart that made the first one so successful. The sheer amount of Spider-People is the star attraction of the trailer,
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released on June 2 2023 in cinemas.
