New images for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon show robots and a four-foot gun

New images for Zack Snyder’s upcoming sci-fi epic released by Empire Magazine tease Anthony Hopkins as one of the film’s robot characters, lovingly called Jimmy.

The image sees Jimmy sitting next to a girl holding flowers on a stone, and doesn’t give much context for the scene in question.

Zack Snyder teased that audiences can expect a wildcard character from the robot. “He’s on a journey of self-discovery.”

Jimmy was brought to the quiet planet of Veldt by the Imperium who are the evil rulers of the galaxy and who want all of Veldt’s resources.

He was repurposed by the Imperium to do some of the busy work they don’t want to do, and will change over the course of both parts of Rebel Moon.

Hopkins’ presence to the film adds an Arthurian influence, adding to the samurai laden Akira Kurosawa and the heavy Star Wars cues from George Lucas. The names of some of the characters also imply Roman influences.

“He’s Lancelot for sure. I was thinking about him, and how Milius [another hero in the story, played by E. Duffy and named after Conan The Barbarian writer-director John Milius, as well as filmmaker Mike Mills] is Percival,” Snyder explained.

Another image teased Darrian Bloodaxe played by Ray Fisher, who audiences might know as Cyborg from Justice League.

But instead of being covered in metal, this time he has a huge four-foot gun.

Rebel Moon is a space opera which will see a young woman seeking out warriors to help her defend against the armies fighting her colony.

The film is split into two parts, but Snyder said that he could keep on going with this universe.

“We can sink our teeth pretty deep into this. We can’t really hit the bottom.’” Snyder told Empire Magazine.

He also clarifies that Veldt isn’t the titular Rebel Moon, despite its opposition to the Imperium,

“The Rebel Moon is not the moon that they’re on,” Snyder said. “There’s a planet named Vanna, and Vanna is the rebel moon. It’s not even in one shot of this movie!”

The film was originally pitched as a mature take on Star Wars, but has been redeveloped into an original universe.

It stars Sofia Boutella as Kora, Djimon Hounsou as General Titus, Charlie Hunnam as mercenary pilot Kai, Ed Skrein as Admiral Atticus Noble, and Fra Fee as Regent Balisarius.

The film will be released December 22, 2023.
