Godzilla x Kong sequel announed with Shang Chi writer
Legendary have committed to a new Godzilla movie set in the Monsterverse.
Writer Dave Callaham, who has previously worked on ‘Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ has been tapped to pen te sequel.
The announcement of a sequel is unsurprising, as ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ has dominated he box office, grossing close to $555 million worldwide.
It’s the second biggest amount in the Monsterverse franchise, after 2017’s ‘Kong: Skull Island’ which achieved a worldwide total of $568 million.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, where this news originated, ‘Godzilla x Kong’ might be the most profitable movie of the five moives in the franchise, with a production budget of $135 million.
It’s not clear if Adam Wingard, director of ‘Godzilla x Kong’ and 2021’s ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ will return for the sequel.
Callaham is no stranger to the Monsterverse, having written early drafts for 2014’s ‘Godzilla’ and recieved a story credit.
The writer is best know for kicking off he action franchise ‘The Expendables’ and has worked on the 2021 ‘Mortal Kombat’ reboot and ‘Wonder Woman 1984’.
He wrote ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ and co-wrote the Oscar-winning film ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ and is writing the final film in that series, Spider’Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ with Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
The sequel for the film doesn’t have a release window yet.
