Star Wars FPS game at Respawn cancelled by EA

EA has announced that a ‘Star Wars’ first-person shooter game that was being developed by developer Respawn has been cancelled.

EA Entertainment president Laura Miele announced the news in a note to staff, which also detailed the company’s future priorities.

“It’s always hard to walk away from a project, and this decision is not a reflection of the team’s talent, tenacity, or passion they have for the game,” Miele wrote. “Giving fans the next installments of the iconic franchises they want is the definition of blockbuster storytelling and the right place to focus.”

Very little was known about what the game would have focused on, and the game was in early development.

It was rumoured that the game would feature a Mandalorian protagonist, but this was not confirmed.

Despite this cancellation, EA has committed that a third title in the ‘Star Wars: Jedi’ series will be released.

Part of the team that was developing the game will be reassigned to other projects at Respawn, including ‘Apex Legends,’ ‘Iron Man,’ ‘Black Panther,’ and ‘Jedi’.

This announcement followed EA CEO Andrew Wilson confirming the company will lay off 670 people, around 5% of its total workforce.

EA already laid off 6% of its workforce in March 2023.

Respawn are the developers behind the two prior ‘Star Wars: Jedi’ titles following protagonist Cal Kestis, ‘Fallen Order’ which released in 2019 and ‘Suvivor’ which released in 2023 on current gen consoles.

The studio announced they were working on a port for ‘Suvivor’ for last gen-consoles in August 2023.
