Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 trailer 2 reaction

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 had a second trailer debut during the Superbowl, and it mostly reuses shots and lines from the first trailer, but there are a few more jokes in this one and a better look at the new villain, the High Evolutionary, that are worth talking about.

The trailer opens and closes with Peter Quill talking to Gamora, trying to convince her that she does love him, but in both instances he’s rejected. To remind audiences, she died in Avengers: Infinity War, and a different version of her came back in Avengers: Endgame. This means she hasn’t become Peter’s girlfriend yet.

The first tactic that Peter uses is to very quickly explain what’s happened, but it’s unlikely that Gamora will buy it and just get with Peter. It’s humorous when Nebula has to back him up, saying that yeah that’s the gist of it, but not really. The last attempt fails when Gamora points out that Peter is describing Nebula. The two quickly get defensive, but the audience can see Peter failing for Nebula, to which she quickly recoils.

Both attempts happen in the prison type building from the first trailer, but there’s no indication who owns it or why the Guardians are there.

The High Evolutionary’s goals are more fleshed out in this trailer, with him saying that his “sacred” mission is to create a perfect society, which while vague, sounds very creepy, especially in the way it’s delivered by actor Chukwudi Iwuji. The villain first appeared in 1966, as someone who is obsessed with forcefully evolving animals. He is a great villain to explore Rocket’s origins.

But we get a far more trustworthy explanation from Rocket, saying that he didn’t want to make things, but he just hated them the way they were. This voiceover is heard over some horrible looking experiments on a much younger version of Rocket. It’s so far a mystery what causes the High Evolutionary to come into the Guardians life, one that will no doubt be explained.

There is another shot of the cool looking multicoloured space suits from the first trailer. Drax has a heartfelt thank you, which begs the question – will he not be coming back from this mission? We know that this is the last film for this version of the Guardians, which means some big emotional moments might be coming our way.

We then see some more of Adam Warlock flying, and his golden colour looks much better than the first trailer. His purpose isn’t clear yet, he’s likely to still be after the Guardians from the second film. He does also defend the High Evolutionary, so it’s probable they have some form of alliance in the film.

More shorts go by, and a few stand out are Groot and Peter shooting back to back, Rocket reuniting with his family, and Cosmo the Spacedog, who is just such a good boy. There are some action beats, and Rocket saying that they will all fly away together, which is yet more set up for the emotional third instalment.

The Guardians of the Galaxy will face the music when the film comes out on May 5, 2023.
