By Kieran Burt.
On what would have been his 100th birthday, Marvel announced that they will be releasing a documentary to celebrate Stan Lee’s legacy as the co-creator of many of the legendary Marvel characters so vital to our culture today.
Stan Lee has had his hand in creating many of Marvel’s most well known characters with fellow artists John Kirby and Steve Ditko, such as Iron Man, Spider-man, X-men, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Nick Fury and hundreds more.
He has also appeared as a cameo in several different superhero films, with his last appearance being in Avengers: Endgame.
“Disney+ announced the news on their Twitter account, saying: 100 years of dreaming. 100 years of creating. 100 years of Stan Lee.
“Stan Lee, an Original documentary, is streaming 2023 on #DisneyPlus.”
A 25 second video teased the documentary, showing cameos of Stan Lee. The camera zooms out to a drawn picture of the artist.
Specifics of the documentary are yet to be released, but it’s likely that it will follow Stan Lee’s long and successful career at Marvel.
Stan Lee began his career in 1941, first creating the hero Destroyer. He died on November 12, 2018 aged 95.
Genius Brands International, the company that owns the rights to the name, voice, likeness, signature and licensing of intellectual property relating to Stan Lee and is signed on to co-executive produce the Stan Lee documentary.
In a statement, the chairman and CEO of the company Andy Heyward said: “We are thrilled to celebrate Stan Lee’s 100th birthday today with multiple initiatives that pay tribute to this true cultural icon starting with creating a marketplace for his fans and with telling his fascinating story in the upcoming film premiering on Disney+.”
In May 2022, Marvel and Disney acquired the rights to use Stan Lee’s likeness for 20 years.
Marvel hasn’t said the date when this documentary will be released. It will be on Disney+.
