The Horus Heresy-Legions Is A Fun Card Game But Lackluster Warhammer Game
The Horus Heresy: Legions is a card game set during a civil war. Specifically one of the most important events in the Warhammer 40k universe. Players can control space marines, the adeptus mechanicus and other forces of the Imperium, or Chaos forces. Most legions are led by big name characters fans will recognize. New players can get by without much knowledge of any backstory since deck composition isn’t tied to factions. Gameplay is fairly standard. Anyone with a passing knowledge of tabletop card games will probably get through this with minimal difficulty.
Luck of the draw can determine a lot about how each round goes. Though cards can be replaced before each match. Building around your chosen commander can tip things in your favor. They have special abilities, can buff or heal, or deal more damage so players have an incentive to keep them alive. Unless a player gets especially bad draws a lot of battles in the campaign or against bots won’t be too difficult. Items must be unlocked through a battle pass. Therefore unlocking new cards can take so long it drains all excitement. But it does allow players to see exactly what they’re working towards.
Players are immediately punted into PVP. Deck building is slow and players can potentially be matched by someone who’s unlocked more cards. Each deck is restricted to thirty cards though. The quality of each deck can vary significantly. If players stick it out, the game does become more enjoyable.
Horus Heresy: Legions relies heavily on players being Warhammer fanatics. There’s little details like commanders taunting each other during matches, which adds some fun. This acts as the game’s chat system but has limited options and gets repetitive quickly. Fortunately or not there are tons of cards to collect that more than make up for this. There is a sense of progression in the game, but its campaign could be stronger. Players looking for quick matches throughout the day will likely have a lot of fun with Legions.
