The Forever Winter Is A Brutal Extraction Shooter In Need Of Polish

The Forever Winter is an extraction shooter set in a future of war-torn countries. No one can remember when or why this war started. It’s a dire world with a distinct look that stays faithful to the hopeless atmosphere, even down to small details. Players aren’t the hero that can jump into each match guns blazing. As a scavenger, the gun is both a defense and what leads to death. Every moment makes it clear that a war is happening around the player.

Besides scavenging on the player’s way to get out (and even that requires surviving for a set amount of time), they have another goal. There’s a real time water mechanic. Run out of water and the settlement fails. It’s nerve-wracking but finding water may be the least difficult objective. When things go as smooth as anything can in this game. The Forever Winter has had a rough start to early access. Though patches have gone out, bugs and glitches still plague the gameplay. Sneaking past threats is pivotal to survival. That’s impossible to do when enemies suddenly spawn around the player.

On top of those issues, the game is hard to put it frankly. This can be satisfying. It’s incredibly frightening to get caught in a tight space with one of the unkillable enemies. Players can slip by if they’re lucky and patient enough. Or when players accidentally get drawn into a firefight that pulls in multiple factions. And there’s a chance to slip away while they fight each other. There’s so much potential for later patches to improve the game even more.

That being said, The Forever Winter has a hefty entrance fee. It is enjoyable solo or co-op. Players who need a new gritty, unforgiving game will love this. If the price is just too steep for early access, there’s a demo. If The Forever Winter does look interesting keep up with patch notes to find out the best time to join. There’s still new maps and enemies to be added. Which could explore a world already full of interesting, and horrifying, creatures.
