The Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy to Watch This Week
Another week brings some great new picks to watch, as one of Netflix’s biggest hits comes to an end after three seasons, and there are several Spielberg classics that deserve another look.
Squid Game Season 3
Streaming June 27 on Netflix
Get ready to play, because the third season of ‘Squid Game’ is arriving on Netflix this season, and will see the end of the hit show.
One of Netflix’s most popular shows that broke records with its first two seasons, it follows a group of contestants who’ve signed up to take part in a game show and have to complete various tasks in hopes of winning a huge cash prize. The only catch is that most of the games are fatal, and if you lose, you die.
As this is the final season, and it doesn’t look like there’ll be anything else coming from this franchise for a while, it’s likely this will wrap up the story completely, and bring an end to the characters’ storylines, and not leave them hanging the way season two did.
All Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies
Available to watch on Peacock
The ‘Jurassic’ movies have proved to be some of Spielberg’s most successful work. The franchise started back in 1993 with ‘Jurassic Park’, based on Michael Crichton’s bestselling novel, and spawned a sequel, also directed by Spielberg, and a third, often forgotten movie. Then, ten years ago, the franchise was brought back from extinction with ‘Jurassic World’, a massive hit that launched another trilogy. Now, on July 2, the series is back again with ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’, so if you want to go back and czech out any past entries or need a refresh before going to the cinema, then Peacock has you covered, with all six movies streaming now.
It’s fair to say the franchise has evolved quite a bit over the last thirty years. It started out as a slick, smart sci-fi thriller, and then more recently became monster action movies, drawing inspiration from the likes of ‘Godzilla’, rather than trying to be scientifically accurate. The latest movie looks like it might be stepping back a bit though, the name ‘Rebirth’ suggests a new era, and the action is confined to a single island once again, so it could be more like the original than recent entries.
War of the Worlds
Available to watch on Paramount+
On the subject of Spielberg movies, one of his less-famous ones is turning twenty this month. Back in 2005, Steven Spielberg made his own adaptation of H.G. Wells’ classic sci-fi novel ‘The War of the World’, with Tom Cruise in the lead role.
It’s not his best known movie, but it’s worth checking out, calling back to his earlier films like ‘CLose Encounters’ and ‘E.T.’. It’s not a close adaptation of Wells’ book, in fact, aside from the fact it features aliens invading Earth, it could be a completely original film, but it’s still got that Spielberg feel, focusing on a family caught up in the middle of the chaos.
That’s all for this week, but make sure to check back next week, as we enter July, and some of the really big releases begin hitting theatres, that you won’t want to miss.
