The Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy to Watch This Week

As we approach the end of May, we get into the summer blockbuster season, with the first big release coming from none other than Disney, as they line up a remake of an animated classic that could be a hit with families.

Lilo & Stitch

In theaters from May 23

The train of Disney live-action remakes of classic animated movies is still rumbling on, despite the decision to cancel ‘Tangled’ earlier this year. Now we’re coming into the modern era, with a remake of a film that’s barely twenty years old, the 2002 classic ‘Lilo & Stitch’.

Stitch is an alien experiment that escapes from a ship while being transported, and crash lands on Earth in Hawaii, where he meets with orphaned girl Lilo. She adopts him as a pet, and the two form a friendship, despite Stitch causing chaos wherever he goes.

Disney has already released one live-action reimagining this year, with ‘Snow White’, which failed to make an impact, so all is riding on this movie to give them a hit, and possibly decide whether they continue with these remakes.

Fountain of Youth

Streaming May 23 on AppleTV+

Watching the trailer for this movie, it feels like we’re going back to the 2000s, when studios were really into the treasure hunting genre, with a range of movies following experts as they travelled around the world, hunting artefacts, finding clues, and uncovering conspiracies. Films like ‘National Treasure’, ‘The Mummy’ franchise, and adaptations of Dan Brown novels were big business.

This movie feels like it could be eager for some of that nostalgia, as it follows an estranged brother and sister who go in search of the legendary Fountain of Youth. It’s got some big names attached to it, with John Krasinski and Natalie Portman starring, and Guy Ritchie directing, and looks like it could be a fun time.

A Minecraft Movie

Available of digital and VOD from May 20

The first big blockbuster hit of 2025, bringing in almost a billion dollars, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ owes its success to the fact it became a viral hit, with videos showing crowds of teenagers throwing popcorn and yelling along to the movie flooded the internet.

Based on the hit video game, its low Rotten Tomatoes has done nothing to harm its performance at the box office or its popularity with fans, giving cinemas a much needed boost (though you do feel for the staff who had to clean up after).

If you didn’t see it in theatres, or just need to watch it all again, now you can do so on VOD and digital, so you can sing along to Jack Black’s songs and shout out “Chicken Jockey” from the comfort of your own home.

That’s all for this week, but there are lots of new releases coming up this summer, so make sure to check back so you never miss any of the best sci-fi and fantasy on offer!
