The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that longtime Marvel star Mark Ruffalo will reprise his role as Bruce Banner aka the Hulk in ‘Brand New Day’.
Ruffalo first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2012 film ‘ The Avengers’, taking over from previous hulk actor Edward Norton.
Ruffalo’s last appearance in the MCU was the 2022 miniseries ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ where he appeared with his son Skaar. It’s unclear if Skaar will return as well.
Ruffalo’s appearance continues the trend that the Holland-centric Spider-Man films pair Spider-Man with a more seasoned MCU actor.
Robert Downey Jr. appeared as Iron Man in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, Samuel L. Jackson appeared as Nick Fury in 2019’s ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ – though Fury in this film was actually Skrull Talos in disguise, played by Ben Mendelsohn – and Benedict Cumberbatch appeared as Doctor Strange in 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.
But Ruffalo isn’t the only returning MCU actor, as Michael Mando will reprise his role as the Spider-Man villain Mac Gargan aka The Scorpion.
He last appeared in the MCU in the post-credits in the 2017 film ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ as one of the inmates alongside Adrian Toomes aka the Vulture (Michael Keaton), though hasn’t had a chance to suit up as the scorpion yet in the MCU.
Audiences did get a different interpretation of the character in the Spider-Man animated series ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ in early 2025 voiced by Jonathan Medina.
Jon Bernthal also joins the cast as the Punisher, the first time the character will appear in a live-action movie since the late Ray Stevenson played the character in the 2008 film ‘Punisher: War Zone’.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ will release in cinemas on July 31, 2026.
