Shazam! Fury of the Gods Trailer 2 Reaction

By Kieran Burt.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods has released a second trailer and it teases an epic conflict between Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu’s Daughters of Atlas and Zachary Levi’s Shazam. This trailer highlights the two daughters waging a war to destroy Earth using a large dragon and other terrifying looking creatures.

Most of the trailer is composed of action shots, but what it does is highlight how the scale of the Shazam films are increasing. The first Shazam film’s conflict and destruction were both much smaller in scope, with Mark Strong’s Doctor Sivanna having a more personal vendetta against Shazam. The Daughters are much more content to let the rest of Earth feel their wrath.

But while this film is raising the scope of the conflict, it still looks like it will manage to keep the tight knit family relations and comedy that made the first film great. The ending to the hilarious conversation that Helen Mirren’s Daughter has with Shazam is shown, and it looks like they will brawl with each other.

The trailer also hints at Shazam’s arc. Djimon Hounsou’s wizard from the first Shazam! film returns, and has to encourage Billy that he can beat the two Daughters. He seemingly has a crisis in confidence, as he’s very worried that he won’t be able to defeat the pair.

It’s also hinted that Shazam might have a self-sacrifice moment in the film, as he is trapped behind a dome in the trailer, and later on he is seen falling to the ground. While he is seen getting up, it could be a misdirect. Depending on James Gunn’s plans for the DC universe (which at the time of writing haven’t been released), Shazam might not be included. A self-sacrifice would be a great way to go out for the character.

Overall, the trailer hints that there will be a lot of action in the film, and that it will be upping the ante for DC’s kid superhero. It looks like it will be a fun ride, though hopefully too much of the action beats haven’t been given away.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods releases in cinemas on March 17.
