Robocop: Rogue City Is A Flawed Love Letter To A Classic Film

Robocop: Rouge City is a first-person shooter that captures the action movie level but struggles in other areas. It’s built with fans in mind. It can feel nostalgic walking around the police station and other locations. The plot continues from movies and involves a cast of returning characters. They aren’t that memorable without some prior knowledge, and the voice acting is hit or miss. The zany combat carries a lot of the weight in this game. Anyone unfamiliar with the franchise may have a harder time overlooking its rougher edges.

As Robocop, players will tackle a new drug called Nuke. While trying to protect Detroit a new underground boss will reveal himself. Of course, his goal is to destroy the player at all costs. There’s an awkward stiffness while interacting with characters. This is hidden by the details in most locations that make each appear ripped right from the film. The devs also managed to make playing an unwieldy tank does not feel like combat drags. Though it can grow repetitive since most enemies don’t stand a chance.

During combat players can blow off body parts, as well as throwing enemies. Their ragdoll animations remain fun throughout the entire game. Environments can be destroyed during shootouts. Everything from tables to walls and anything enemies attempt to hide behind. Gameplay is smooth for the most part. Too many enemies on screen can cause frame drops.

Rogue City also makes sure to highlight that Murphy is still himself. Side quests aren’t always fun but do give players the chance to interact with their community. This earns their adoration even if players get an ending where Robocop’s humanity isn’t acknowledged among politicians. Its narrative also wraps up nicely, but there’s still a DLC coming this year. Unfinished Business will see Robocop taking on an elite mercenary group who have taken over an OCP tower. The DLC will also expand the game’s limited arsenal and include intense flashbacks to when Murphy was still alive. If you want to a B action flick with an underlying social commentary, this may be worth checking out.
