Percy Jackson and the Olympians Renewed for Second Season
‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ has been renewed for a second season on Disney Plus.
Disney made the announcement during its recent Q1 earnings call, when it revealed its list of
upcoming projects.
Based on the best-selling series of novels by American author Rick Riordan, the show follows
Percy Jackson, a boy who discovers he’s actually the son of Posiedon, the Ancient Greek god
of the sea. The books won acclaim for their unique retellings of the classic myths, set in the
present day.
The first season premiered on Disney Plus on December 20 last year and was an instant
success, with fans praising it for its faithfulness to the books, which led to it scoring an
impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also had the highest number of views for a premiere on
Disney Plus not associated with Marvel or Star Wars, according to Nielsen’s streaming charts,
which no doubt compelled Disney to give the go ahead for another season.
Season two will adapt Riordan’s second novel, ‘The Sea of Monsters’, which sees Percy setting
out to rescue his friend Grover from the cyclops Polyphemus, and find the Golden Fleece to
save the enchanted pine tree that protects Camp Half Blood. This will be the second adaptation
of the book after the 2013 movie ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’ starring Logan Lerman,
which received generally negative reviews due to its deviations from the source material.
With seven books in the series, there’s been a lot of speculation about how the show would go
about adapting them, possibly combining several into one season, but it seems like this will be a
straight adaptation of the book.
There’ve been no details revealed yet about who from the original cast is returning for the show,
though there will be some new additions, as the book introduces several characters, like Percy’s
half-brother Tyson. There’s also been no confirmation of when the new season will begin
shooting, or of a potential release date, though stars of the show have expressed their
excitement at continuing to explore their characters.
