Minecraft Animated Show in the Works at Netflix

Mojang Studios and Netflix have confirmed that an animated show based on the game ‘Minecraft’ is in development.

Netflix

According to Netflix, it “will feature an original story with new characters, showing the world of ‘Minecraft’ in a new light.”

Plot details are still unknown, and no cast are attached. A release date was also not provided.

The series will be CG-animated in development with WildBrain, a Canadian studio responsible for shows like ‘Sonic Prime’ ‘Ninjago: Dragons Rising’ and ‘Carmen Sandiego’ for Netflix.

WildBrain has also produced ‘The Snoopy Show’ and ‘Snoopy in Space’ for Apple TV+ and ‘Fireman Sam’ on Channel 5 in the UK.

Mojang released the original ‘Minecraft’ game back in 2011, but thanks to its unique art style and ability to reshape large chunks of the world it resonated with millions of fans, and is still highly popular today.

The game still receives regular content updates, with the next one, titled Tricky Trials, will release on June 13.

Mojang has created ‘Minecraft’ spin-offs such as ‘Minecraft: Story Mode’ ‘Minecraft Earth’ ‘Minecraft Dungeons’ and ‘Minecraft Legends’.

‘Minecraft’ also has a live-action film in the works backed by Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary with Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks and Emma Myers to star and Jared Hess directing.

The film will premiere in cinemas on April 4, 2025.

Hollywood has seen an explosion of TV shows and films based on video game properties, such as ‘Arcane’, ‘Castlevania’, ‘Halo’ ‘ Sonic the Hedgehog’ and ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’.

The series was announced during Mojang’s celebration of the first ‘Minecraft’s’ 15th anniversary.
