James Gunn Hints at Release Date for DCU Series
The highly anticipated DC Universe series Lanterns is shining brighter on the horizon, with
co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn hinting at an early 2026 release window for the HBO Max
series. While a precise date remains under wraps, this update gives eager fans a clearer idea of
when to expect the “True Detective-type mystery” featuring Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
Gunn has consistently emphasized a more grounded and character-driven approach for the
DCU, and Lanterns appears to embody this vision. The series is set to follow veteran Green
Lantern Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) and rookie John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as they
investigate a perplexing, Earth-based murder that eventually unravels into cosmic
consequences. This blend of street-level detective work with the vastness of the Green Lantern
Corps mythology promises a fresh take on the iconic characters.
Production for Lanterns has been progressing steadily, with reports indicating filming began in
February 2025 and recently wrapped earlier this month. The series is confirmed to consist of
eight episodes and will be a foundational part of DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
Lanterns will play a crucial role in expanding the universe and introducing audiences to the
cosmic side of DC in a unique, character-focused way. The “around the same time” release as
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (June 2026) suggests a packed schedule for DC fans in the
coming year. While we await the official confirmation of the exact premiere date, the early 2026
hint ensures that the wait for the Green Lanterns’ return to live-action won’t be much longer.
