Avatar: Fire & Ash Trailer Breakdown
The latest trailer starts with a quick glimpse of the stunning Hallelujah Mountains, those floating, misty mountains filled with valuable unobtanium, which have long been a source of conflict between the Na’vi and the Sky People, or RDA. Then we’re introduced to the flying creatures and the Tlalim Clan, led by Peylak. They’re a group of nomadic travelers, kind of like wanderers of Pandora, always exploring.
In the second part of the franchise, we saw Jake Sully and Neytiri adapting to life with the Metkayina Clan, an ocean-dwelling group led by Tonowari and Ronal, who also appear in the trailers. Jake and Neytiri are still grieving the loss of their eldest son, who was tragically killed by a stray bullet while trying to save his brother Lo’ak and their human friend, Spider.
What really catches our attention is the introduction of the Ash Tribe, also known as the Mangkwan. They’re led by Varang, a fierce and merciless leader who has no sympathy for either humans or Na’vi. This tribe once worshipped their own hometree and lived in harmony with nature, just like other Na’vi clans, but after a volcanic eruption destroyed their homeland and sacred tree, turning it all to ash, they lost faith. Since then, they’ve become bitter, aggressive, murderous, and far more violent than clans like the Omatikaya. Their clans comprise of Na’vi people who have murdered their own.
There’s a scene in the trailer where we see Miles Quaritch, now in his Na’vi avatar, finding the Ash Tribe and possibly making some sort of deal with them. It looks like he might be planning to team up with them to hunt down or capture Jake Sully. Since the Ash Tribe hates Eywa and nature just as much as the RDA does, it makes sense they’d allow Pandora to be mined for its resources without a fight. We also get a glimpse of a fight between Jake and Quaritch, which could be the big climactic battle of the film.
On another note, there seems to be some tension building between Neytiri and Spider. This might have to do with the fact that, in the last film, Spider saved Quaritch from drowning. If Neytiri finds out, things could get even more complicated. That might be the “hate” Jake is talking about in the trailer.
