A Story About My Uncle Is A Soaring Platforming Experience That May Have Gone Under Your Radar

A Story About My Uncle is pure escapist fantasy. A man tells his daughter of the time he went on a grand adventure. He sets out to find his uncle who has gone missing while out exploring. Ultimately, it’s the journey that’s the most fulfilling part. The world is detailed and full of dream-like areas that stretch far into the distance. The narrative flows smoothly even if there’s little character development.

The gameplay consists of fast paced platforming sections. Players get a few different gadgets to help them traverse floating rocks and more. Often getting over an obstacle requires a combination of the three: a glove that allows players to boost, a grappling hook, and rocket boots. This isn’t an overly difficult game, but quick reaction times and getting a hang of the gadgets are necessary. It’s thrilling to sprint, boost and swing through alien landscapes. Waypoints are typically easy to spot. This keeps gameplay moving without coming to an abrupt halt.

Most of the danger in this game will come from the player. Mistiming jumps can lead to significant setbacks. Though there will be occasional enemies. Their mechanics are simple and moving too soon or too late is going to be the biggest issue. And when players aren’t flying through the air, they’re finding little notes and hints of their uncle’s time with these strange creatures. This world feels like it’s older than you can imagine and the game barely shows you a glimpse.

A Story About My Uncle is a fun game to play. Its actual story is straightforward with an ending that’s lackluster compared to the rest. The conversation between father and daughter is still heartwarming. However, the lack of a name creates a distance that’s hard to overcome. The fluidity of motion and nearly constant progression carry this game on their shoulders. Players who enjoy either a rich world or prefer gameplay over story, can both get something from this experience.
