A God Without Gods? Marvel Comics Set to Rewrite Thor’s Reality

Major changes are brewing in the Marvel Comics universe, as the publisher prepares to
significantly alter the very fabric of Thor’s existence and the role of Asgardian mythology within
its official continuity. As of August 2025, Marvel’s main reality, Earth-616, will reportedly no
longer feature the Asgardian gods as literal beings, effectively removing all Norse mythology
from its mainstream lore. This radical shift aims to reinvent Thor as “a man with a hammer,”
promising a new status quo unlike any in the character’s 60-year history.

This dramatic overhaul is set to unfold in Al Ewing and Pasqual Ferry’s upcoming Thor #1,
following the climax of the current Immortal Thor series. While details are still emerging, it
appears the overarching narrative of Immortal Thor has been building towards a “death of Thor”
that will lead to this profound alteration of reality. The implications are far-reaching: will Thor be
shunted into a pocket reality where his godhood never existed? Will the entire history of Asgard
be rewritten as mere fiction within the Marvel Universe? While such sweeping changes are often
temporary in comics, this move suggests a bold new direction for the God of Thunder, forcing
him to confront threats and challenges from a place he’s never been before – a world where his
divine origins are no longer a tangible truth.
