‘The Last Of Us’ Season 3 in the Works: What We Know So Far
The popular HBO Max TV show based on a largely-loved video game will be getting a
season three, and fans couldn’t be more thrilled. The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic drama set
twenty years after a global pandemic caused by a mass fungal infection has ravaged the world,
turning humans into violent, zombie-like creatures called the Infected and collapsing civilization.
The first season, which premiered in January 2023, primarily follows Joel Miller (Pedro
Pascal), a hardened survivor haunted by past trauma, who is tasked with smuggling a
seemingly ordinary 14-year-old girl named Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) out of an oppressive
quarantine zone in Boston. What begins as a simple job quickly transforms into a brutal and
heartbreaking journey across a devastated United States as they must rely on each other for
survival against not only the Infected but also hostile human survivors. Ellie harbors a secret:
she is immune to the Cordyceps infection and may hold the key to a potential cure, making her
a highly valuable asset to a rebel group known as the Fireflies.
Season 2, which premiered in April 2025, picks up the story approximately five years
after the events of the first season. Joel and Ellie are now living in a relatively safe community in
Jackson, Wyoming. However, their past actions catch up to them, leading to devastating
consequences and setting them on a path of revenge and further hardship in an even more
dangerous and unpredictable world. The second season is expected to adapt elements from
The Last of Us Part II video game.
Now, Season 3 is currently in the works and was announced on April 9th, just days
before season 2 premiered on Max. What’s known so far is that it will adapt portions of the 2020
video game, but not much else has been revealed. Fans will have to wait, but it will be worth it.
Stay tuned for further news regarding the upcoming season, though it’s looking like it will be
another two years until release.
