EA Cancels Black Panther Video Game

EA has cancelled a video game based of the popular Marvel hero Black Panther and closed the developer behind it, Cliffhanger Studios.

Jason Schreier of Bloomberg reported that an email from the President of EA Entertainment and Technology Laura Miele said this and other reorganisation moves were made to “to sharpen our focus and put our energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”

“Looking ahead over the next couple of years, we’re focusing on what we believe will have the biggest impact — ‘Battlefield’, ‘The Sims’, ‘Skate’, and ‘Apex Legends’ — and continuing to invest in blockbuster storytelling with Iron Man and the third installment of the Jedi series,” she continued. “Our mobile business also remains a meaningful part of our future.”

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Wilson has said that EA plans to develop less licensed games and focus on its own properties.

A company representative told IGN that EA will continue to make three games based off Marvel characters, including one around ‘Iron Man’.

Schreier also reported that the game would have used its own version of the Nemesis system first seen in the ‘Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor’ game, but it wasn’t far enough along for executives.

Marvel has had a few video game releases over the past few years. ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ released in 2020, ‘Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’ in 2021, ‘Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ in 2022, and the hit ‘Marvel Rivals’ in 2024.

Marvel has several upcoming games from different developers, like ‘Marvel Cosmic Invasion’, ‘Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra’, ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’, ‘Marvel’s Blade’ all planning to release over the next few years.

It’s unclear what the other two Marvel games from EA will be about.
