New Trailer Revealed for Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ on Netflix

After the success of his show ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’, Guillermo Del Toro is teaming up with Netflix again to make an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel ‘Frankenstein’, joining a growing list of talented directors who are turning to streaming to get their work out into the world.

At Netflix’s Tudum event on Saturday, the first trailer for the movie was shown, giving some clues as to what to expect.

As you would imagine from the man behind movies like ‘Hellboy’ and ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, the trailer has extraordinary, eye-catching visuals. It has that kind of gothic aesthetic that fits so well with this story, alongside some steampunk-style equipment, which mixes well with it. The scenes shift from the dark shadows of the doctor’s lab to the frozen wastes of the Arctic, suggesting we’ll be seeing several scenes from the book, hopefully recreated faithfully.

There’s a certain feel of a graphic novel to it as well, especially in the use of light and shadows, which suggests that Del Toro will be putting his own unique stamp on the movie.

Over the years there have been dozens of versions of ‘Frankenstein’ retold on screen, from Universal’s adaptation in the 1930s, to the British Hammer horror movies a few decades later. The Monster has become a massive part of pop culture, instantly recognisable, and a common feature of Halloween decorations. He’s been featured in spoofs and rip-offs, cartoons and animation, and appeared in movies like ‘Van Helsing’. As a result, it will be hard for Del Toro to make something that stands out, but from this trailer, it looks like he might have succeeded. Hopefully it won’t fall into the category of “Netflix movie” in the way things like ‘The Electric State’ did, and will instead give us a taste of some truly spectacular gothic horror.

Oscar Isaac stars as Victor Frankenstein, alongside Jacob Elordi as his failed creation, with Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz also featuring. No exact date has been set, but it’s due to release on Netflix in November this year.
