The Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy to Watch This Week

We’re now halfway through April, and still the great new movies and shows keep coming. This week, we have several popular shows returning with new seasons, including a retunf to Gilead, and a trip aboard the USS Callister!

Gremlins: The Wild Batch Part 2

Now streaming on HBO/Max

An animated prequel show to the classic 1984 movie ‘Gremlins’, the series follows the young mogwai Gizmo, as he fights monsters in 1920s China.

The first part of the season released back in October of last year, and now the second half, consisting of five episodes, has dropped, so you can now catch up on the show, or finally do that binge watch you’ve been waiting to do.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6

Now streaming on Hulu

Based on the novels of the same name by Margaret Atwood, the series is set in a dystopian future where widespread infertility has led to women subjugated and used as natal slaves by the ruling elites to try and repopulate the country.

This is the final season of the show, and will be released weekly until 27 May. A sequel series is also in the works.

Black Mirror Season 7

All episodes now streaming on Netflix

The popular sci-fi anthology series has returned for its seventh season at Netflix, with another six episodes to enjoy, including the return of the USS Callister, from one of the best received episodes of the show. It’s a parody of Star Trek, set aboard the fictional starship, which is actually inside a virtual reality video game created by tech company Callister Inc.

This latest season has six episodes in total, exploring ideas of artificial intelligence, consciousness, and relationships.

Andor Season 1

Now’s as good a time as any for an ‘Andor’ rewatch to prepare for the second season which will be arriving later this month. One of the most critically acclaimed Star Wars shows, it serves as a prequel to ‘Rogue One’, following the title character Cassian Andor as he comes into conflict with the Empire, is imprisoned, and becomes a part of what will eventually become the Rebel Alliance.

Captain America: Brave New World

Available to rent or buy on digital

The latest movie in the MCU, which sees Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) take on the role of Captain America to face new threats, as the president Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross has some of his dark, secret past revealed.

It was a disappointment at the box office, making $414 million, against a reported budget of $180 million, and receiving a 48% Rotten Tomatoes score, but if you didn’t see it at the cinema, now you can check it out at home and see for yourself.
