Wonder Woman Game Cancelled as Warner Bros. Discovery Shutters Three Studios
The game centering on DC heroine Wonder Woman in development at Monolith Productions has been cancelled, and the studio has been shut down by Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).
Two other studios, Warner Bros. Games San Diego and Player First Games have also been shut down.
The news was first reported by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg but later confirmed by WBD.
In a statement to PC Gamer the company said: “We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building the best games possible with our key franchises—’Harry Potter’, ‘Mortal Kombat’, DC and ‘Game of Thrones’.
“After careful consideration, we are closing three of our development studios—Monolith Productions, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them.”
WBD continued by acknowledging the closure of Monolith Productions and the cancellation of the Wonder Woman game: “Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities,” the spokesperson said. “This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games.
“We greatly admire the passion of the three teams and thank every employee for their contributions. As difficult as today is, we remain focused on and excited about getting back to producing high-quality games for our passionate fans and developed by our world class studios and getting our games business back to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.”
Monolith Productions had been working on a game on the DC hero for some time, with an announcement trailer in 2021 teasing players.
It was described as being powered by the Nemesis System, a framework that allowed players to develop close relationships with AI enemies.
Monolith developed this for 2014’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ tie-in game ‘Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor’ and further refined it in 2017’s sequel ‘Middle-earth: Shadow of War’.
WBD patented this system until 2036.
Player First Productions was formed in 2019 and their last game was the online fighting game ‘MultiVersus’, which saw characters from across WBD’s stable of intellectual property duking it out.
‘MultiVersus’ will have its servers shutdown on May 30 of this year.
Warner Bros. Games San Diego was a support studio formed in 2019, and helped with the development of Rocksteady’s 2024 game ‘Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’.
These closures come shortly after Warner Bros. Games chief David Haddad stepped down from his role
