Fantastic Four: First Steps Official Teaser Trailer Reaction
Marvel has released the first official teaser trailer for the upcoming ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ movie, which comes out in July. This first trailer highlights the retro tone of the film and provides an introduction to each of the film’s four main characters. There’s even a proper glimpse at Galactus! It’s an epic first trailer, giving audiences a taste of what they can expect in just a few short months.
Sticking with the idea of taste, the opening of the trailer, with Marvel’s first family parading about in a documentary style. Reed Richards explains that they always eat dinner together, emphasizing their strong connection to each other. Audiences get to see the robot H.E.R.B.I.E onscreen for the first time, a loveable looking guy with a white head and reels on his face. His cooking skills are rather humorously critiqued by Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s The Thing, an obvious reference to Moss-Bachrach’s popular show ‘The Bear’.
The look of the film is also, um, fantastic, with the classic aspect ratio leading audiences in before it expands to the modern 16 by nine. Audiences get a look at most of the ‘Fantastic Four’ in costume, and surprisingly they don’t look goofy at all. It all fits the tone that Marvel Studios are going for. The Thing looks actually quite good, showing the CGI wizardry on display.
After the dinner sequence, Reeds reminisces to Sue Storm after the time before their first trip to space, and it shows that Ben took pride in his looks before turning into The Thing. It sounds like Reed wishes that time was back. But Sue merely says that their powers help represent who they are as people, with Ben always being a rock. Johnny Storm always being a hothead, and her holding the group together. It puts a wholesome spin on things, and shows that while this isn’t an origin story, the four have only recently got their powers.
Speaking of Johnny, Joseph Quinn does make an appearance, though he doesn’t do anything to convince the audience that he should be Johnny Storm, though that is only first impressions and not a final verdict. Galactus also makes his debut, in a comic book accurate appearance that looks glorious. Notably, there are no hints of what the Silver Surfer looks like, nor anything on Doctor Doom.
This first trailer though is brilliant at introducing the retro futurist world that the Fantastic Four live in, and while three out of the four main actors’ slot amicably into their roles, Quinn has just that little bit more convincing to do before he can be accepted as a strong version of the Human Torch. But hopefully the full film will be able to do that, which comes out on July 25.
