Sony Cancels God of War Live Service Game
Sony has cancelled a live service game based on the ‘God of War’ franchise and one other live service game. Bloomberg first reported the news.
The cancellation of the games will not lead to the shuttering of the studios developing the games, Bend and Bluepoint. Sony did not confirm whether layoffs would occur.
“Bend and Bluepoint are highly accomplished teams who are valued members of the PlayStation Studios family, and we are working closely with each studio to determine what are the next projects,” a spokesperson told Bloomberg.
The cancellations are due to a “recent review” within Sony.
Bluepoint was working on a live service ‘God of War’ title. The last game from that franchise was 2022’s ‘God of War Ragnarök’ from developers Santa Monica Studio.
Bend was working on a new IP which would include multiplayer and “[build] upon the open-world systems of ‘Days Gone’”, which was launched back in 2022.
This is a further retreat from the live service sector that Sony was keen to enter only a few years ago.
In February 2022, then-Sony exec Jim Ryan explained that Sony would aim to publish 10 live service games in the coming years.
This has not come to fruition, with games like ‘The Last of Us: Factions’ being cancelled at Naughty Dog, and ‘Spider-Man: The Great Web’ at Insomniac.
2024 saw the high profile failure of ‘Concord’ back in 2024, with the game being taken offline in two weeks..
Sony has had one notable success with the launch of ‘Helldivers 2’, which exploded into the mainstream and the comapny is even turning into a movie.
