Andor director to make new Star Trek prequel movie

One of the directors of the critically acclaimed ‘Star Wars’ show ‘Andor’, Toby Haynes will take the reins to direct a prequel to 2009’s ‘Star Trek,’a film that rebooted the franchise starring Chris Pine as the iconic Captain Kirk.

Seth Grahame-Smith will write the film, with J.J Abrams’ Bad Robot producing.

There is no reported plot for the film, but it is said that it will show the early days of Starfleet decades before 2009’s ‘Star Trek.’

Haynes also directed the ‘Black Mirror’ episode “USS Callister”, which heavily parodied ‘Star Trek’ and other science fiction franchises.

He directed a total of six episodes in ‘Andor’, including episode ten “One Way Out”, which is one of the fan-favourite entries.

The show has been nominated for eight Emmys.

Grahame-Smith stormed onto the scene as a novelist with books like ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.’

He has several film credits to his name, producing ‘It’ and penning ‘The Lego Batman Movie.’

While there hasn’t been a ‘Star Trek’ film since 2016’s ‘Star Trek Beyond’, the brand remains strong with fans due to the popularity of several Paramount+ shows like ‘Picard’ and ‘Strange New Worlds.’

On the film side, production on ‘Star Trek 4’ stalled in 2022 when its director, Matt Shakman, left the project to helm Marvel Studios ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot.

A replacement director has yet to be announced, though Paramount remains committed to making the film, maintaining it’s still in active development.

Paramount announced another film in 2023, titled ‘Star Trek: Section 31,’ starring Michelle Yeoh.

Production for the feature is reported to begin in January 2024, and Paramount is yet to announce the release date for the film.
