X movies? Elon Musk’s social media site rife with illegal film captures

Piracy in the entertainment industry is an eternal struggle, with studios trying to police a never-ending flow of illegally streamed films on websites like Pirate Bay. 

They now have another place to monitor for people illegally uploading their films, Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. 

Shortly after ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ hit digital storefronts, a user posted the entire film on X. 

It remained there for 12 hours before it was removed, amassing over 340,000 views.

It is not the first time an entire film was uploaded to the platform illegally.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s ‘The Flash’ was also streamed on X, after one moviegoer used their phone to record a cinema showing. 

Universal found their smash new film ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ on X during its theatrical release in April. 

Users subscribed to X Premium can post videos up to 2 hours long with a maximum file size of 8GB. 

This only applies to IOS and X.com users. Android users can post videos up to 10 minutes long with X Premium.

Both ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ and ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ had success at the box office. 

‘Across the Spider-Verse’ is the sequel to 2018’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’.

A third movie, titled ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’, was slated for a March 2024 release until Sony removed it from their schedule. 

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ is based on the popular Nintendo property. 

It follows the plumber Mario (Chris Pratt) and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) as they’re pulled into the Mushroom Kingdom. 

‘The Flash’ did not enjoy this same success, with a lackluster opening and a sudden drop-off. 

The film follows Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) as he causes multiversal chaos when he rewinds time to save his mother.
