Injustice 3 teased by NetherRealm Studios boss Ed Boon

NetherRealm Studios boss Ed Boon recently teased that the Injustice franchise might not be done yet.

In a discussion with IGN, Boon explained why NetherRealm decided to pursue creating Mortal Kombat 1 instead of Injustice 3

Citing the pandemic and the shift in game engines as the reason Mortal Kombat 1 was prioritised over a new Injustice entry, Boon clarified that the studio’s long term goal is to “get back” to the franchise.

“There were a number of factors, some of which I can talk about, some of which I probably shouldn’t. We really wanted to be careful with COVID and all that stuff and everybody staying safe,” Boon said.

“So there were a bunch of variables involved that eventually we realised, ‘Okay, let’s do another Mortal Kombat game and hopefully we’ll get back to the Injustice games,” he added.

But the implication here is that Injustice 3 could be the next game from NetherRealm following Mortal Kombat 1.

Even if this is the case, a new entry wouldn’t come out for years, as the game will take a while to create.

Assuming a similar time span plays out between NetherRealm releases, fans might be looking at a 2025 or even a 2026 release for a new Injustice game.

Injustice: Gods Among Us was released in 2013 with a sequel titled Injustice 2 published in 2017.

Both are fighting games, and see audiences take control of their favourite DC superheroes and use them to pummel their opponents to beat them.

As James Gunn and Peter Safran are now at the helm of DC Studios and have said that the video games will form part of the DCU canon, it’s not clear it would fight into their overarching story.
