Disney’s Tron 3 to star Jared Leto

After years of waiting, Tron 3 is finally moving forward. Jared Leto, has been attached to the project since 2017 will star in the sequel titled Tron: Ares. Joachim Ronning, a frequent collaborator at Disney, is in talks to direct the film, with Jesse Wigutow writing the script, Deadline reports.
While the deal isn’t complete yet, if this were to go through Tron: Ares would be the fourth film that Ronning and Disney have worked together with, with him previously directing 2019’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
He has recently completed filming for the upcoming Disney+ film, titled Young Woman and Sea, which will star Daisy Ridley and will be based on the book by Glenn Stout.
The Tron franchise has had a turbulent history. The first film, released in 1982, starred Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a video-game designer who gets transported inside his own creation. There, he teams up with a security program called Tron, played by Bruce Boxleitner.
It wasn’t a box off smash but it did wow audiences with its amazing visual effects at the time. In 2010, Disney released a sequel called Tron: Legacy and in 2012 released an animated series set in the universe called Tron: Uprising. This show takes place in between Tron and Tron: Legacy. It’s in this gap that the 2011 short film Tron: The Next Day also sits.
A sequel to Tron: Legacy has been attempted for some time at the studio, but it hasn’t been able to get off the ground. Now that the film nearly has its direction, the crew are eyeing up an August start date for production.
Tron: Ares will continue the story after Tron: Legacy. It’s unclear when this film will be released, but it’s not likely to come out for a while yet.
Jared Leto has recently starred in the critically panned film Morbius, and will co-star in Disney’s reboot of Haunted Mansion, which will release in August 2023.
