Secret Invasion Trailer

Article by Kieran Burt.

Audiences got a look at Secret Invasion during D23, and it highlighted the creepiness of not knowing who to trust. Nick Fury will star in the series, trying to uncover what the Skrulls are up to.

The trailer quickly addresses the fact that Nick Fury has been avoiding his duties for several years, during which time he has missed two separate multiverse crises, uprisings in Germany due to the Flag Smashers, Wanda’s breakdown and death and Spider-man having his identity compromised. But it seems Fury hasn’t been on holiday as the post credits of Far From Home suggest, as when the camera faces Fury, he’s beat up, with a scar on his face and overgrown hair.

The series reveals two other familiar faces, Don Cheadle’s Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes/War Machine and Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross. It’s not clear what role either will have yet, but Fury asked Rhodes how much he knows about his security detail, which means Fury doesn’t trust them. Rhodes has already appeared in Phase Four, appearing in as a cameo in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It seems he has a similar role here, leading into Armor Wars.

The trailer also gives us a look at Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos, who will be fighting against his own people. There is a brief shot of the shapeshifting again, with Talos attempting to find someone. Mendelsohn also appears to be himself kept in the dark, with Fury saying that he is the only thing standing in the way of what the Skrulls want, but Talos doesn’t know what that is, and neither do the audience. It’s clear Fury doesn’t know who to trust.

The series will also feature Damage Control, which will hopefully explain the organisation more, as over the past few Marvel properties they have rapidly expanded. It remains to be seen whether S.W.O.R.D will make a reappearance, but it’s highly likely as this will be the case. It’s not clear if this series will tie into the ending of WandaVision, or The Marvels, which is set to release at the end of July 2023. Both would appear plausible

The music of the trailer adds to the feeling of untrustworthiness going about, adding to a spy-thriller series. This series is like Captain America: Winter Soldier dialled up to eleven. Hopefully this series will be less action oriented, and focus more on uncovering who is a Skrull, and who is human. There are some action beats teased, with someone using a helicopter to attack a convoy, and an explosion in a town.

The series will premiere in Spring 2023.
