This Cyberpunk Classic is Finally Getting a TV Adaptation on Apple TV
After decades of development hell, William Gibson’s groundbreaking 1984 novel,
Neuromancer, is officially being adapted into a 10-episode television series for Apple TV+. This
is a landmark moment for the science fiction genre, as the book is widely considered the
foundational text of cyberpunk, influencing countless works from The Matrix to Cyberpunk 2077.
The series will follow Case, a data thief who, after a botched job, has his nervous system
crippled, preventing him from accessing the virtual reality cyberspace known as the matrix. He is
given a chance at redemption by Armitage, who recruits him and Molly to pull off a seemingly
impossible heist against the powerful Tessier-Ashpool corporate dynasty and their enigmatic
artificial intelligence, Wintermute. The story is a deep dive into a world of digital espionage,
corporate intrigue, and existential questions about humanity and technology.
Filming for the series began in January 2025 in Tokyo, a key setting from the novel’s opening
chapters. While a firm release date has not yet been announced, given the extensive special
effects and post-production work required, it is expected to premiere on Apple TV+ in late 2025
or 2026. This long-awaited adaptation is a major addition to Apple’s growing lineup of
high-budget science fiction content, including the hit series Foundation and Silo.
