The Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy to Watch This Week

April is almost over and we’re heading into May and another month of sci-fi and fantasy offerings. That also means that we’re closing in on summer, and the summer blockbuster period, with several potential box office hits to come over the next few months. This week, we kick things off with what could be Marvel’s biggest release so far this year, and another trip to a galaxy far, far away.

Thunderbolts*

In theatres from May 1

The second of three Marvel movies coming out this year, ‘Thunderbolts’ has some heavy lifting to do to help take away the sting of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, which underperformed earlier this year, and prepare the way for ‘Fantastic Four’ which will arrive in July.

The movie follows the Thunderbolts, a group of misfit anti-heroes that includes Bucky Barnes, the Red Guardian, and Yelena Belova. When a massive threat descends on the Earth, and the Avengers are nowhere to be found, they need to find a way to work together to save the day, maybe save themselves from their dark pasts too.

Early reactions have been positive, with it gaining one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores ever for an MCU movie, and being called a bold new step for the franchise.

The Eternaut

Streaming on Netflix April 30

In Argentina, a deadly toxic snowfall wipes out most of humanity, but this is just the first wave of an attack on the Earth by an unknown enemy. The only way anyone will survive is if they work together to fight this unseen force.

The show is an adaptation of the Argentine graphic novel written by Hector G. Oesterheld and illustrated by Francisco Solano Lopex, which was published in 1957.

Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld

Streaming on Disney+ May 4

The latest entry in the Star Wars ‘Tales Of’ series, this latest miniseries takes a look at the backstories of two popular animated characters, Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane.

We’ll get to see how Ventress survived the Clone Wars, despite apparently dying, and also see more of Bane’s past.

These limited series have been filling in the gaps for established characters for a while now, first in 2022 with ‘Tales of the Jedi’, then again last year with ‘Tales of the Empire’, and there’s plenty of ground for them to cover. This also releases on May 4th, AKA Star Wars Day, so will add an extra layer of celebration to the occasion.

That’s it for another week. As we move into the summer months, the studios will be releasing some of their biggest titles, and there are plenty of great new movies and shows to look forward to, so make sure to check back here to stay up to date on the best sci-fi and fantasy entertainment out there.
