The Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy to Watch This Week
Last weekend, the movie industry had a surprise hit on their hands when ‘A Minecraft Movie’ blew up, doubling its box office predictions and getting some positive (and not so positive) audience reactions, which led to a $300M+ worldwide opening weekend. Proof that video game adaptations are huge right now, which is good news for Warner Bros., as they have another big-name adaptation coming this week.
The Last Of Us Season 2
Streaming April 13 on HBO Max
The popular show returns for its second season. Based on the video game series of the same name, the show follows Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Joel (Pedro Pascal) as they navigate their way through a post-apocalyptic world, after a violent pandemic has wiped out most of humanity, and turned many others into mutated zombie-like creatures.
Though it’s based on the video games, there’s likely to be some changes made. Season one broadly adapted the events of the first game, but as this isn’t the final season, it probably won’t adapt all of the second, most recent game, so the story can work out for several more seasons.
Doctor Who Season 2
Available April 12 on Disney+ & BBC One/iPlayer
The second season of the second reboot of the classic British sci-fi show is coming back to Disney+ this week. Starring Ncuit Gatwa as (at least) the fifteenth incarnation of the title character.
As often happens with a new season, the Doctor is getting another companion, Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu, who’s no stranger to sci-fi adventures, after starring in ‘Star Wars: Andor’, also on Disney+.
This season will follow the Doctor as he tries to return Belinda to Earth, but has to battle a mysterious force that’s preventing them from returning.
Moonrise
Streaming April 10 on Netflix
If you’re in the mood for some anime, then check out Netflix’s new series ‘Moonrise’. In the future, humanity uses the Moon as a dumping ground for criminals and waste, which creates poverty and resentment in its inhabitants, who form a rebel movement. When Jack loses his family to these rebels, he joins the Earth army and goes on a mission to the Moon, but finds out things aren’t exactly as he imagined.
That’s the best sci-fi and fantasy around to watch this week, but April has some more great movies and shows coming out, so check back next week to see what’s available on TV, streaming, and in cinemas.
