The Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy to Watch This Week
Another week and time for another round up of the best sci-fi and fantasy out there for you to watch, in theatres, streaming and on TV. This week we’ve got wicked witches, sci-fi musicals, and a video game adaptation that’s looking for a new audience.
Snow White
In theatres from March 21
The biggest release in cinemas this week has to be Disney’s ‘Snow White’, the latest in a long line of live-action remakes from the House of Mouse.
There’s been a lot of bad press around this movie and its main star, so much so that Disney even cancelled the red carpet premiere in the UK, and scaled back their US event too, so it’s all hanging in the balance to see whether this movie can salvage its reputation once it releases.
Disney have been remaking their classic animated movies for over a decade now, with films like ‘Cinderella’ and ‘The Jungle Book’, but this is a big one, as it’s the movie that started it all back in 1937, and made the studio into the titan of family entertainment that it is, so they have to get this right. If it fails, it could have big consequences for their other live-action adaptations in the future.
O’Dessa
Streaming on Hulu/Disney+ from March 20
This is a weird one, a dystopian sci-fi musical starring Sadie Sink (‘Stranger Things’) as a young girl who travels across a post-apocalyptic land to find an heirloom and rescue her one true love!
From the trailer, it’s hard to know what to make of it, but whatever it is, it looks like a unique movie, featuring sixteen original songs.
It’s coming to Hulu from March 20, and to Disney+ for those in countries where Hulu isn’t available.
Ash
In cinemas from March 21
If you’re in the mood for some scares this week, then ‘Ash’ might be what you’re looking for. A sci-fi horror mystery that looks like it could be in the same line as ‘Event Horizon’, a woman wakes up on a planet to find that the crew of her space station have been viciously killed, and her investigations set in motion a terrifying chain of events.
It had a premiere at SXSW, and will be getting a limited theatrical release, so could be on digital soon if it’s not available near you. Amazon Prime Distribution have acquired international rights to it, so expect to see it on the platform soon, if you’re outside the US.
Wolf King
Streaming on Netflix from March 20
This series has flown almost completely under the radar, and there’s not much talk about it, even on Netflix’s own site. It’s an animated adaptation of the ‘Wereworld’ novels by Curtis Jobling, about a young boy who’s a werewolf, and also heir to the throne. So if you fancy some YA coming of age drama, give it a go.
Halo seasons 1 and 2
Streaming now on Netflix
There’s the same old story that seems all too common in the streaming age, a show comes along, you’re just getting into it, then it gets cancelled before the story’s over. That’s what happened with ‘Halo’, the Paramount+ adaptation of the video game series, which was dropped after just two seasons.
But now, you can watch both of them on Netflix, after the streamer picked them up. This doesn’t mean there’s going to be a third season coming along anytime soon, but it might help the show reach a bigger audience and gain some new fans, which could help its chances a little. Anyway, if you want a video game adaptation to keep you busy util season two of ‘The Last of Us’ comes along, then head over to Netflix and check it out.

That’s it for another week, and a relatively quiet one, at least as far as big-name streaming shows go, but there’s plenty more coming out over the next few months, so check back next week for another rundown!
