The Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy to Watch This Week
The third week of July brings a brief pause in the box office battle, as we await the release of ‘Fantastic Four’, which means there’s time to take a step back and relax a little, and maybe the perfect way to do that is by going on an adventure with a group of small, blue creatures that are only “three apples high”.
Smurfs
In theaters July 18
The Smurfs are getting another movie, which sees the little blue creatures going on an adventure into our world to save Papa Smurf who’s been kidnapped by the evil wizard Gargamel.
We last saw Peyo’s creation onscreen over ten years ago, with ‘The Smurfs 2’, starring Neil Patrick Harris, but it appears this new movie isn’t a direct sequel to them, but will tell a new story that puts Smurfette in the lead, voiced by Rihanna, who also provides new, original music for the movie.
Star Trek: Strange New World season 3
Streaming July 17 on Paramount+
Star Trek is back on our screens with the third season of ‘Strange New Worlds’, the series following Captain Chris Pine, Spock and the crew of the Starship Enterprise, a decade before the original series.
Its third season will pick up where season two left off, after their encounter with the Gorn. The series has gained a following and received positive criticism for its bold new approach, which includes unusual episodes, such as one filled with musical numbers.
Ant-Man
Available to stream on Disney+
Incredibly it’s been ten years since ‘Ant-Man’ was released. The first MCU movie starring Paul Rudd as the superhero who can shrink down to the size of, well, an ant.
It’s not the kind of Marvel movie that will blow your mind. Ant-Man doesn’t have the same kind of power as, say, Hulk or Thor, and doesn’t have the resources of Tony Stark, but it’s still a fun watch, and goes back to a simpler time for the MCU, before there were multiverses and magic for the heroes to worry about.
