The Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy to Watch This Week

As we see out the month of May, we wave goodbye to the first part of the Summer season, with some new releases from Netflix and a recent addition to Disney+ that will keep you entertained at home when you’re scrolling for your next watch.

Lost in Sunlight

Streaming on Netflix May 30

An animated movie set in the near future, the official synopsis from Netflix reads:

“In 2050 Seoul, astronaut Nan-young’s ultimate goal is to visit Mars. But she fails the final test to onboard the fourth Mars Expedition Project. The musician Jay buries his dreams in a vintage audio equipment shop.

The two fall in love after a chance encounter. As they root for each other and dream of a new future. Nan-young is given another chance to fly to Mars, which is all she ever wanted…”

In recent years, the streamer has been bringing in more and more anime releases, so if you’re looking for your next anime watch, here it is.

Captain America: Brave New World

Streaming on Disney+ from May 28

Since ‘Brave New World’ was released in February, we’ve already had another movie from the MCU release in the shape of ‘Thunderbolts’, which means it’s already getting old. The most recent Captain America was a disappointment at the box office and a critical failure, with just 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. There’s a good chance then that you didn’t see it in theatres, but good news if you’re a Disney+ subscriber, because the film will be arriving on the streamer from May 28. Now you can enjoy a bright red Harrison Ford smashing things from the comfort of your own home.

Star Wars: Episode IV – The Empire Strikes Back

Available to watch on Disney+

2025 was a big year for Star Wars, with ‘Revenge of the Sith’ celebrating its 20th anniversary. In all the celebration of that movie, another film from a galaxy seems to have gone under the radar, as this year marks 45 years since ‘Empire Strikes Back’ was released.

A sequel to the first Star Wars movie, it’s commonly considered to be the greatest film in the franchise, with its darker tone, powerful themes, and the reveal that still packs a punch all these decades later. Not that you need an excuse to rewatch such a great movie, but if you did, then this is a good one, and if you’ve somehow never seen it before, then you’re in for a real treat!

That’s all for this week, but check back next week for another rundown of the best sci-fi and fantasy to watch. By then we’ll be in June, and there are some amazon releases coming that you definitely won’t want to miss.
