Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope to Return to Cinemas in 2027 Anniversary Re-release

‘Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope’ will return to cinemas in 2027 to mark its 50th anniversary.

It will land in cinemas on April 30, 2027.

Star Wars

The film from director and writer George Lucas, released in 1977, kickstarted the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, which now spans 12 theatrical films, and quickly became immensely popular.

Starring Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, the young boy goes on a journey across the galaxy with Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) to save Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) from the clutches of Darth Vader (suit David Prowse, voice James Earl Jones) and the evil Empire.

The film stunned audiences and resulted in the ‘Star Wars’ brand becoming a household name, spanning films, TV shows, books, video games, comics, and merchandise.

In 2012, George Lucas sold the rights to his film company, Lucasfilm to Disney for 4.05 billion, with the rights to ‘Star Wars’ included with this.

Disney has created several films in the ‘Star Wars’ franchise like 2015’s ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’, 2017’s ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi’ and 2019’s ‘Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker’.

The next ‘Star Wars’ film to hit cinemas will be ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ directed by Jon Favreau, and starring Pedro Pascal as the titular Mandalorian, on May 22 2026.

At Star Wars Celebration Japan, the company announced that another ‘Star Wars’ film in development, ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ will hit cinemas on May 28, 2027 starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy.
