Star Wars Actor Angus MacInnes Dies Aged 77

Angus MacInnes, best known for his appearance as Gold Leader in the ‘Star Wars’ franchise has died aged 77.

According to a statement from his family, the actor died “peacefully, surrounded by his family and love” on December 23.

He was born in Canada in 1947, with his family statement saying that “Angus was more than an actor—he was a kind, thoughtful, and generous soul who brought warmth and humour into the lives of everyone who knew him.

“He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and fellow actors but also by his fans around the world – his family thank you all.”

MacInnes played Gold Leader aka Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander in two ‘Star Wars’ films – ‘A New Hope’ and ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’.

Outside of ‘Star Wars’, MacInnes appeared as Fergie in 1985’s ‘Witness’, Sgt Whitman in 2004’s ‘Hellboy’, General Tom Barnes in 2007’s ‘Flight of Fury’ and Maersk Alabama crew member in 2013’s ‘Captain Phillips’. He also appeared in the 1995 version of Judge Dredd, played Council Judge Gerald Silver.

It is his ‘Star Wars’ character Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander, who MacInnes will be most remember for.

Better known as Gold Leader, Vander flew a Y-Wing bomber in the climax of ‘A New Hope’ during the Rebel Attack on the Death Star.

Vander would perish in that attack, as his ship was blown up by Darth Vader.

MacInnes would return to voice the character in the prequel film ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ during the climatic space battle above the planet Scarif.

Unused archive footage of the actor from ‘A New Hope’ was also used to bring the character back.

‘Star Wars’ fans meant a lot to the actor, as the family’s statement said they “held a special place in his heart.”

“He loved meeting you at conventions, hearing your stories, and sharing in your passion for the saga,” they said.

“He was continually humbled, delighted, and honoured by the admiration and passion of the fans and convention community.”
