Spider-Punk Spider-Verse Spin-off in development by Daniel Kaluuya
Daniel Kaluuya, the voice behind Spider-Punk in ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’, is developing his own animated film based on the character.
Entertainment Weekly first reported the news. Kaluuya is joined by Ajon Singh to develop the movie.
Details of the project are unknown, but it’s safe to assume that Kaluuya will reprise his role as the Camden-based Spider-Punk, whose real name is Hobie Brown.
Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel invented Brown in 2015 in the comics as a punk, alternate-universe version of Spider-Man.
Brown is from Earth-138 and uses his guitar as his main weapon to take down corrupt systems.
‘Spider-Verse’ writer-producer Phil Lord said to Entertainment Weekly in 2023 that Brown “was in and out of the picture for a little while because we weren’t sure which elements we were going to stick in this part and which were going to migrate to the next movie.”
“When we met Daniel Kaluuya, we realized that he had to be Hobie Brown, no matter the cost. And Hobie had to be in the movie because that personality needed to be part of the story.”
Sony’s third instalment of the ‘Spider-Verse’ franchise, ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ is set to hit cinemas on June 25, 2027 after years of delays.
Originally set to come out in March 2024, but due to the Hollywood strikes the film was pushed back.
‘Across the Spider-Verse’ left lead Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore, in Earth-42 in the clutches of Prowler Miles. Ghost Spider aka Gwen Stacey voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, from Earth-65 and a team of other Spider-People – including Spider-Punk set out to find Miles.
Meanwhile, antagonist Spider-Man 2099 aka Miguel O’Hara, voiced by Oscar Isaacs, returned to Miles’ home on Earth-1610B to prevent him from saving his dad Jefferson Davis, voiced by Brian Tyree Henry from the villainous Spot, voiced by Jason Schwartzman.
