Skeleton Crew Official Trailer Reaction
The trailer for ‘Skeleton Crew’ gives audiences a younger look at adventure in ‘Star Wars’, going for a feel of ‘The Gnoonies’ or ‘Stranger Things’, kids stepping out into the world for the first time. There’s also a proper look at Jude Law’s character, and how he comes into contact with the kids. It’s a fun trailer that sets the tone for the show, and adds a basic outline for what the show will do.
The first few shots establish the kids normal lives in a galaxy far far away, with very normally looking suburbs and even a mundane school life. They’re studying for a test at school, no different from any kid here. It’s admittedly jarring to see the mundanity of the ‘Star Wars’ world, as the audience has often focused on conflict, even in something as bureaucratic as ‘Andor’. No doubt as more is shown audiences will get used to this, and it’s key to set the stage for what’s to come.
One longs for adventure though, watching tales of Jedi like many have. When he stumbles on what he hopes is a lost Jedi Temple with friends, they get whisked away on board a starship, likely called the Onyx Cinder. Sounds like they’re going to miss that test. The ship joins a fleet of what looks like pirates, likely the same as Gorian Shard from ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3, which will likely kick off the chase. Audiences already know that Vane from that season will also be returning.
Aboard this vessel is the droid first mate SM33 or Smee, furthering the pirate connection. He looks suitably terrifying and is voiced by Nick Frost. It remains to be seen how or if he’ll help or hinder the lost kids now suddenly under his care. Throughout the rest of the trailer, audiences can see the familiar action packed galaxy, full of monsters and cute but powerful aliens.
In the final few seconds of the trailer, audiences get a better look at Jude Law’s character Jod Na Nawood using the Force to pull a key to escape a prison. His character is very much an unknown currently.
Throughout the trailer, it very convincingly sells the idea of ‘The Gnoonies’ but ‘Star Wars’, among many other fairytale adventures. The choice of pirates as the antagonists is very intentional, and Disney choosing traditional villains for this kind of tale. It’s picked an identiy, which sets it apart from the rest of the ‘Star Wars’ canon. This swing is both exciting for ‘Star Wars’ but safe for Disney.
‘Skeleton Crew’ looks like it will be a light and pleasant tale of several kids experiencing the wider world, and along the way becoming closer friends. It might even be an entry point for younger fans of the franchise, which is always a good thing. Audiences get a good sense of the vibe of the show, which is a key objective for a first trailer.
