‘Silo’ Season 2, Episode 10 Review
With episode ten, we reach the finale of ‘Silo’ season two, the gripping post-apocalyptic thriller from AppleTV+.
As the story reaches its conclusion, the stakes hit their highest point. The rebels finally put their plan into action to take control of the silo and get the answers they want. It turns out that Walker managed to warn them she was being watched, which meant all the information Bernard picked up from the camera was false, and led them in the wrong direction.
Using this trick, the rebels manage to lure all of the raiders down to the lower levels, then blow up the stairs to trap them down there. Through Billings, they manage to get the sheriff’s department on their side, and break free from their cells. While they are so close to the victory they need, they are also at risk from a group of their own people, led by Patrick Kennedy, who believe it’s safe outside, and want to open the outer doors.
Meanwhile, when Bernard learns the truth from Lukas Kyle, that there is another authority, outside of the silo, that controls everything and can destroy them at will, he gives up trying to fight, handing everything over to Sims, and planning to go outside to die.
Things are going a little better for Juliette. She’s running out of time to get back home, but the suit she made is secure, and Solo also tells her about the “Safeguard”, that can wipe out the inhabitants by piping poison gas into the silos. She races back to her own silo, and manages to communicate through the viewer to warn them it’s not safe outside.
As happened with season one, we get left on a massive cliffhanger here, with several character’s lives in the balance, and still no clear indication of how things will be resolved. Juliette and Bernard are trapped in the decontamination room when it’s scorched by fire. My guess is her firefighter suit will protect Juliette, though what will happen to Bernard is anyone’s guess.
Even if she does survive, she will have to deal with the situation inside, including the death of her father. There’s also been a breakdown of authority, and Sims, who now has access to the vault. While the immediate danger has passed, there’s still a lot of difficult things to overcome in the future.
The last scene also opens up a big question. It’s a flashback to the “Before Times”, meaning before the silos were built, where there’s talk about a radioactive device being detonated by Iran in the US. Clearly this hasn’t been enough to cause the devastation we see outside the silos, so does this mean it led to all-out nuclear war?
This is a really awkward scene that feels tacked on, rather than really setting up for the net season. We get to see the PEZ dispenser that was a big MacGuffin in season one, but there’s no clear way this ties into the rest of the show, as none of the characters introduced here have been mentioned before. No doubt it will all become clear next season.
Sticking with this season, though, this was a great climax to it all. A huge amount was packed into this episode, and every revelation we’ve had throughout the season has only added more questions to the list that need answers, while twisting up the tension, before leaving us hanging like this, until season three comes along.
