‘Shin Godzilla’ Gets a 4K Remaster, Stomping Back into Theaters!
Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi’s critically acclaimed Shin Godzilla (2016) is set to receive a
stunning 4K remastered theatrical re-release in North America, with screenings beginning on
August 14, 2025. This marks a thrilling opportunity for fans to experience the chilling and
politically charged kaiju film on the big screen with unprecedented clarity.
Distributed by GKIDS, this 4K restoration will present “Shin Godzilla” in its original Japanese
language with subtitles and restored text cards. It’s the first time this particular 4K remaster has
been released in North America, promising to enhance the film’s already striking visuals and
grotesque creature design. The film’s meticulous attention to bureaucratic detail and its chilling
depiction of a constantly mutating Godzilla earned it widespread praise and numerous awards,
including seven Japan Academy Prizes.
The upcoming remaster is expected to highlight the grotesque evolutionary details of Godzilla’s
various forms, the harrowing destruction wrought upon Tokyo, and the intricate cityscapes,
providing a truly immersive and terrifying cinematic experience. For those who loved the original
or those who missed it on its initial run, this is a chance to see Shin Godzilla as never before.
While the theatrical run begins in August, fans will also be eager for news on a potential 4K
Blu-ray release, which is anticipated for late 2025. With “Godzilla Minus One” having recently
captivated global audiences, the re-release of Shin Godzilla further solidifies the continued
worldwide resurgence of Toho’s iconic monster.
