Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver trailer reaction
While it’s fair to say that ‘Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire’ released with more of a thud than Netflix might have liked, there’s no denying that there were some stunning visuals in it, shot only in the way that Zack Snyder knows how. Part two of this galaxy-spanning saga, titled ‘Rebel Moon- Part Two: The Scargiver’ is likely to continue the awesome visuals of the first part, and hopefully, it can draw more out of its core characters.
The first character who will get more development is Jimmy the robot, voiced by Anthony Hopkins. His fleeting presence in ‘A Child of Fire’ is a wasted opportunity, owing to casting such a talented actor in such a short and ultimately pointless role. In ‘The Scargiver’, it looks like Jimmy will continue his feral descent, and will once again pick up arms against the Imperium when they threaten Veldt. His eyes glow red, and it looks like he’s on a warpath.
There’s a tease in the next few shots of the Imperium and the farmers of Veldt fighting in a destructive battle, likely the explosive final act of ‘The Scargiver’ as there are also some training sequences teased for the village. ‘A Child of Fire’ had a surprising lack of bigger battles, which ‘The Scargiver’ will fix.
When the imposing Imperium Dreadnought bears down on the village, launching an array of heavy military ships, it no longer conjures up fear and panic in the farmers, only the stern resolve that Admiral Noble and his forces will be sent back to the Motherworld in body bags. But that Dreadnought will have to be dealt with, as its impressive orbital firepower will reduce the village to ash, something that’s teased.
There’s a hint of starfighter action, an aspect lacking in the first part. While it’s cool to see huge capital ships slug it out in orbit, it should be balanced with the nimble and quick action of starfighters dogfighting each other. It also helps to add some texture to the world, filling the arsenal of each faction.
The final shots tease a confrontation between Kora and Admiral Noble, the former assuring the Admiral that this encounter will result in his death. Kora and Noble were among the best parts of ‘A Child of Fire’, so their final showdown will be compelling.
While this trailer is all about teasing the fast-paced nature of the coming conflict hopefully there is some time to slow down and add some context and motivation for the characters Kora met on her journey. That’s one of the areas where ‘A Child of Fire’ fell down the most, along with failing to establish a sense of location. As most of this film will likely be set on Veldt this too will likely be rectified.
‘The Scargiver’ might not be the most anticipated movie after the flaws of the first part, but audiences will likely hope that some of its key problems will be resolved by the end of the credits. ‘Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver’ arrives on Netflix on April 19, 2024.
